Volunteer Opportunities
In addition to the wonderful opportunities Special
Olympics affords the athletes, Special Olympics is
a great way to directly help your community by
volunteering.
Volunteers are always needed as coaches,
assistant coaches, chaperones for athletes at
competitions and to assist in the operation of
competitions.
Lucas County Special Olympics needs many
volunteers for the Area IV Spring Games held in
Toledo each May and the AmVets Bowling
Tournament held in Toledo each December.
High School students needing service hours are
encouraged to assist at these events. Contact
Earma Algee at 419 381-5260 for information on
volunteering.

Lucas County Special Olympics (LCSO)
provides sport training and competition to individuals with intellectual disabilities residing in Lucas County. Over 175 different individuals compete each year through LCSO. LCSO is accredited as a local organization with Special Olympics Ohio. Training and competition occurs year round. LCSO athletes train and compete in aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, gymnastics, power lifting, softball, tennis and volleyball.
About Us…
There is no cost to Special Olympics athletes for training and competition. Local organizations like
LCSO are responsible for raising funds to allow their athletes to train and compete. Each year, LCSO
requires at least $30,000 in donations to provide our athletes with training and competition.Athletes must train for 8 weeks prior to competing. LCSO athletes compete in Special Olympics Area IV
events. Area IV includes athletes from Fulton, Lucas Williams, Defiance, Henry, Sandusky, Ottawa, Erie, Wood, and Paulding Counties. Athletes who earn a 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in their division.
at an Area meet, may have the opportunity to compete at a State meet. At times, LCSO has more athletes qualify than Ohio Special Olympics will allow us to send. When this occurs, a lottery is held to determine which of the qualified athletes will proceed to State Competition. In addition, Ohio Special Olympics charges local organizations like LCSO a fee for each individual or team competing in State competition. This fee is increasing over 50% in 2007.
